Smelling the Truth of God

SCRIPTURE

DEVOTIONAL

In Matthew {6:28 -30}, it says: And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?”

Let’s imagine the scene in Matthew 6:28-30. It takes place on a hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Jesus, surrounded by a large crowd of followers, sits down to teach them about worry and anxiety. The crowd consists of men, women, and children from various walks of life who have come to hear the teachings of this teacher. The atmosphere is peaceful, with a gentle salty breeze blowing through the grassy hillside, and the sound of the waves from the sea providing a soothing sound in the background to Jesus’ words.

As Jesus speaks about the lilies of the field and how they grow without toiling or spinning, the crowd listens intently, absorbing the message of trust in God’s provision. Listening intently, they can almost smell the sweet fragrance of the lilies. The sun begins to set, casting a warm glow over the gathering, creating a serene and contemplative mood as Jesus imparts His wisdom to those who gathered to hear Him.

This verse reminds us of the deep love and care that God has for each one of us. Just like how he takes care of the flowers and provides for their needs, we can trust that He will provide for us as well. It is a beautiful and fragrant reminder of God’s faithfulness and provision in our lives. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s plan and have faith that He will take care of us in times of doubt or worry.

The main theme emerging from these verses is the call to trust in God’s provision and care. Jesus uses the imagery of the lilies of the field to illustrate this profound truth. When He says, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow” He invites us to ponder the beauty and simplicity of God’s provision.

How much more does the Lord care for you? Can you smell the beautiful fragrance of God’s Truth? If you have ever thought about the intricacies of the flower and even the elegant sweet fragrance it emits, you can know through Jesus truth that YOU are more beautiful and worth more than they are — YOU are warranted more care than they are… Soak in the fragrance of God’s Truth in the Scriptures you read today. Here is a song to also meditate through – as a reminder of what we read about today.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, You are true and all You do and speak is true. In a world filled with deception and lies I need to know and trust what is true. Reveal to me the lies I am believing about You, about myself, and about others. Show me Your truth and help me to live in alignment with You. Heighten my sense of smell so I can more quickly perceive what is real and what is fake. May the sweet fragrance of Your truth draw me into greater oneness with You.

SONG

How Much More
Abide

Lyrics:

Look at the birds of the air

They have no worries or cares

When they spread out their wings they know they can fly

Oh, see the wildflowers dressed

Solomon in all of his best

Can't outshine the sun that's giving them life

All of my worries and questions are running in circles, I'm finding

Don't add a moment, a minute, an hour, a second – to my life

How much more do You care for me

If You clothe the fields and the flowers unseen

How much more will You open Your hand

And give to me what You know I need

You know I need

You don't forget or ignore

In You my life is secure

This alone is the cure for anxiety

How much more am I on Your mind

How much more will You provide

You don't withhold any good thing

How much more do You run my way

Right on time, You don't delay

You don't withhold any good thing
