Psalm 78

1 My people, hear my teaching;

  listen to the words of my mouth.

2 I will open my mouth with a parable;

  I will utter hidden things, things from of old—

3 things we have heard and known,

  things our ancestors have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their descendants;

  we will tell the next generation

the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,

  his power, and the wonders he has done. 

Psalm 78 recounts God’s faithfulness to the Israelites, even when they forgot what he had done (v.11). It was most likely written during the divided Kingdom as a call to faithfulness. 

We, like the Israelites, need to remember God’s character, in addition to his acts. Developing trust in God comes from remembering who he is and that he always acts in accordance with his nature. Unlike us humans, his acts never betray him. When we recall the truth of who God is, our trust in him is strengthened. Therefore, like the psalmist says, let us not hide what he’s done. Let us tell the next generation. 

Psalm 78 recounts God’s faithfulness to the Israelites.

• What younger person can you share that story with? 

Lord, thank you for your faithfulness to me. You have been my redeemer, guiding my life. Thank you for never abandoning me. Expose the places in my heart where I don’t fully trust you. Help me walk with you each day. Amen
