Coming Back
SCRIPTURE
DEVOTIONAL
Josiah became king of Judah at only eight years old. By this time, God’s law had been largely neglected for generations. The people had drifted from their calling to follow Yahweh, and worshipped idols instead. The Book of the Law was literally lost in the Temple. When the Law was discovered, Josiah responded in humility and repentance, tore his robes, and sought interpretation from a prophet. He turned to Huldah, a prophetess known for hearing God’s voice.
Huldah lived in the shadows of the Temple and Palace, without priestly office or royal position. Other well known prophets, such as Jeremiah were also in Jerusalem, but God spoke through someone who humbly and faithfully listened to him. Huldah faithfully spoke the word God gave her, confirming judgment for disobedience, but also mercy for Josiah’s humility and repentance. Her discernment guided a king and helped spark a national revival. Just as Huldah faithfully spoke God’s word to a king, we too can impact those around us by listening, discerning, and sharing God’s word with love and humility.
God uses faithful people, often unexpected people, who are willing to seek him, relying on the Holy Spirit, his word, and prayer, for his mission. He uses such people to call people back to himself. Huldah reminds us that everyday faithfulness, listening to God and speaking his truth, can touch a community.
PRAYER
Dear Jesus, Forgive me for the times I have neglected your word and your mission, like the people in King Josiah’s day. Bring your revival to me where I need revival. Give me a heart like yours. I pray for the unchurched and dechurched friends and family that I have. Is there a word you would have me share with them to help them find their way (back) to you? Thank you for using everyday people like me to build your kingdom. Amen.
